Pulp has moved! Over the last few years, Pulp has grown so much that we were bursting at the seams in our old space. We finally decided it was time to move into a larger studio. You can now find us in Studio 8G1 at Vic Yards, just across from our old space. We are so grateful for all this growth, and are very appreciative of all the support we’ve received from this community. To inaugurate this move, we have decided to host some workshops, to share some knowledge and welcome everyone into our new space! Read about them, as well as some other updates, below.
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
On 20 July, we will hosting a marbling workshop, facilitated by Stephan Erasmus and Odette Graskie. You will learn five different types of marbling and leave with ten of your own sheets of gorgeous decorated paper!

Participants will also get a coupon for a discounted lunch at Cheese Capital! The workshop will be R850, and tickets are available at the following link:
On the 3rd of August, we are hosting a case binding workshop. Learn the steps of making your own hardcover book, from sewing together your pages to making your own covers. This is a perfect opportunity to use the marbled paper made in the previous workshop!

MEET NEW PULP STAFF
Our team has grown so much, and we would love to tell you a bit more about our newest team members! In our newsletters, we will be featuring a staff member, to introduce you to one of them and give some updates on what they are working on.
We would like to introduce you to Griffen Alexander, one of our newest Bookbinders. Griffen started at Pulp during our internship at the end of 2023. He studied Fine Arts at Wits, followed by a Honours in Creative Writing. Griffen’s writing is a mixture of everyday life absurdism, sci-fi and dystopian fiction. You can read some of his writing at http://www.griffenwrites.com. Griffen has also been working on a new studio space with other artists, called HOST (at @house_of_specialthings on Instagram). They are a collective of artists and writers looking to cultivate a space that supports creatives in a sustainable, harmonious way. It is an ever-unfolding endeavour open to change and growth, but some recent events that they have hosted includes figure drawing classes, and workshops during First Thursdays at Keyes Art Mile. More classes and openings are in the pipeline!
For his internship, Griffen was given the opportunity to create a publication of his own, and Griffen decided to make a gorgeous book with his sci-fi short story Mother Microbial. We are so amazed by the beautiful bookish object that Griffen wrote, designed and executed in the Pulp studio.
Patterns crystallise on the surface of everyday life. They condense and disassociate.
Have you noticed any patterns in your daily? Do you have an intense desire to get to the bottom of it all? We have an answer: join us for _The Microbial_ gathering, located 46 Karlington View, this Friday.
Help us become one together.
This is Mother Microbial by Griffen Alexander.
PULP EDITIONS
Pulp has also officially started publishing under its own imprint, Pulp Editions. Griffen’s book is only one of the projects we’ve been working on!

Odette Graskie is another of the new bookbinders as Pulp. Unfolding Together is a portraiture activity and colouring book. Based on her practice as a contemporary artist, Unfolding Together invites people to draw, colour, tear and stitch into the book. This artist’s book’s first iteration is sold in a limited edition of 83, with a special Secret Belgian Binding, unique inner pages and two pocket inserts of special larger drawings. This edition is sold exclusively through Berman Contemporary via email at gallery@bermancontemporary.co.za or at this link:
We have been so happy about the great reaction to Oteng’s gorgeous earring books. More than half of the edition has been sold! As our first little publication, these tiny books really paved the way for our internships and the books that have followed. Email us or come visit in store to find out about getting your hands on some of these special books!
