A Postcard Show: Open Call

Open Call

Third Space – a postcard show
Curated by Odette Graskie

Pulp Paperworks and odd. will be hosting an exhibition of postcards.

The third space is defined as a public place outside of home and work where people can gather, socialize, and interact with others. It is a space where we can typically exist without spending any money – a moment of shared life, a community. Third spaces are integral to our existence in a democratic city, and can be a connecting force between people, as well as spaces where well-being is centred. These are spaces that are part of a slower life. A break from the hustle of daily life, they exist outside of the routines of home and work. In South Africa, these spaces are often fraught with tension – public spaces such as parks can be seen as dangerous or polluted, while libraries and other spaces slowly crumble due to lack of maintenance in their upkeep. The re-opening of the Johannesburg Library is one small example of the people of Johannesburg demanding more from the government in making these types of spaces available to the people of the city again.

Nevertheless we find ways to make spaces for ourselves, to enjoy community and existence as human beings, and not as workers or consumers. Show us your moment of making a third space – whether through a depiction of your third space, an imagined world, a detail, or a result thereof.

Pulp and odd. will select the top postcard designs. These will then be printed by the curator in an edition of 30 (and 10 AP’s), to be shown at the Pulp space in Victoria Yards. The exhibition will open on Sunday 6 July during First Sundays.
The postcard editions will be sold at Pulp, with the proceeds split between the organisers and each artist.
