‘Ripples Rhythms and Rapture’ by Zara Julius

Zara Julius is a Johannesburg based artist, researcher and vinyl selector. Her work, stemming from her background in anthropology, religious studies and anthropology; follows a trail of intersecting ideas drawn together under the notion of ‘Rapture’.

RAPTURE

  1. An expression or manifestation of ecstasy or passion
  2. A state or experience of being carried away by overwhelming emotion
  3. A mystical experience in which the spirit is exalted to a knowledge of divine things

(Lindiwe Mxitama for The Bubblegum Club )

This book is accompanied by a smaller ‘Hymn Book’ for Julius’ MA thesis. The work traces, in a series of vignettes, practices of resistance to the experiences of ‘unfreedom’ brought about by settler colonialism, white supremacy and the consequent global capitalist order that ensures a continuation of the status quo.

Each book opens on to a sheet of reflective card; a mirror that ensures the reader sees themselves before reading its contents. The book is printed on Stephen innocent white, 120gsm, with a cover in white Novalite. The pages have each been individually torn.
